August 10, 2017

Dear Noah Webster MicroSociety Magnet School Families:

We hope you are having a restful and enjoyable summer. We would like to welcome our new magnet families to our Noah Webster MicroSociety Magnet School community and let you know that we are very excited for our new school year to begin. As the start of the new school year is fast approaching, it is important that we provide you with information to assist in a smooth transition into the 2017-2018 school year. A letter will also be sent to your home from your child’s teacher or grade level team.

Noah Webster MicroSociety Magnet School would like to acknowledge and commend all of the dedication and hard work of our students, teachers, support staff, families and community partners.  Together, we are making a huge impact on our learning environment by setting high standards and expectations for outstanding student achievement and exemplary culture and climate. In 2016-2017 our school was recognized as a Magnet School of Distinction by Magnet Schools of America and received the 4 STAR Award from MicroSociety International.

We follow the district calendar, which can be found at The first day of school begins on Tuesday, August 29, 2017.  School day hours are:  8:15 a.m. and dismissal is at 3:25 p.m.  No student should be dropped off or arrive to school before 7:55 a.m. Breakfast starts at 7:55 a.m. and runs until 8:13 a.m. PreK students that eat in the cafeteria must be accompanied by a parent. Any student that finishes breakfast after 8:15 a.m. must report to the front desk. Any student that arrives after 8:13 a.m. must enter through the front door and report to the front desk. A staff member will ensure students reporting to the front desk go to their classroom.

For a change in your child’s regular dismissal, we must have a written note in the morning from you or contact the main office (860-695-5380) by 2:00 p.m. (11:00 a.m. for Early Dismissal Days). If you leave a message, a confirmation phone call will be made to let you know we received the message. After 2:00 p.m. (11:00 a.m. for Early Dismissal Days) no changes will be made to dismissal. Students cannot be picked up after 2:40 p.m.  This is an important transition period and students are receiving homework instructions and performing the end of day routines.

Our school uniform (district mandated, not optional) for PreK - 5th grade is a red 2 or 3-button collared polo shirt, khaki pants, and skirts.  Shirts must be tucked in with a belt and pants should fit appropriately (no form fitting or cargo pants). For grades PreK-5th, you may also purchase solid RED sweaters, cardigans, or fleece without patterns/prints for your child to use as the seasons change.

6th-8th Grade uniform is a white collared button down dress shirt (not a polo) with the middle school logo or, white collard button down dress shirt (not a polo) with a V-neck navy blue vest or sweater with the middle school logo on it, red plaid tie or red cross tie, and tailored khaki pants (no form fitting or cargo pants). The middle school logo must be visible at all times. Information for uniform vendors can be found at

Students will be receiving an agenda book (for grades 1st through 8th) or a portfolio handler (for PreK3 through Kindergarten) the first week of school.   Please be sure to read the agenda book or portfolio handler carefully because it contains our expectations, transportation conduct regulations, and other school reminders.  Both the agenda book and portfolio handler are an effective way for you to communicate with your child’s teacher, be informed of school activities and of your child’s academic progress.   We ask you to review your child’s agenda book or portfolio handler every evening, checking for homework, notices from the teacher, and any other school-home related information.

For your convenience, and to avoid classroom interruption during the instructional day, both the agenda book and portfolio handler are your avenue for sending notes, communications, or requests regarding who will pick up your child on a specific day, reason for being absent or tardy, or any other concerns that you feel the school will need to know about in order to be as effective as we possibly can in optimizing your child’s education.

Safety is a #1 priority for all of our Noah Webster families.  Because of this, all outside doors will be locked at 8:15 a.m. (when school begins) and all visitors will be required to enter the school through the main entrance on Whitney Street.  One of our school staff members will always be stationed in the front entrance where visitors must sign in before going to the Main office.  If you are picking up your child during the day, please follow the guidelines in your child’s agenda book and/or portfolio handler.  No student is allowed to leave the building without an adult signing the student out. Because every minute of instructional time is valuable, we ask you to please be sure that you wait until 3:25 p.m. to take your student from class.  In those last few classroom minutes teachers assign homework and reflect upon the learning that took place that day. It is important that your child be a part of that experience.

If your child has a cell phone, it should be kept off and remain either in their locker or backpack during school hours.  If a cell phone goes off in class, your child will be asked to give it to the teacher, who may bring it to the Main Office.
